Around Saint-Emilion

Back to Jack Travel

In the environs of St.Emilion, every little village has a Romanesque church worth a look. One of the best, St.Martin-de Mazerat(1137), is less then a km west. And to change, also west of St.Emilion, overlooking the Dordogne on the D19, is the largest menhir in the Gironde, the 5.5 meters Pierrefitte. Unlike most menhirs, Pierrefitte gets a big summer solstice party---no druids, but old jazz, bonfires, floating candles in the Dordogne, games, food and wine.
Three km north of St.Emilion, the 18th century  Chateau St.Georges  is the most beautiful estate in the area, with several towers from the original castle and a magnificent garden stair. In the village of St.Georges, the 11th centurty St.Georges de Montagne was built on the ruins of a Roman structure and seems to big for its apse. Nearby the village of Montagne has another handsome Romanesque church, with a lovely dome and the ECOMUSEE DU LIBOURNAIS, a better-than-average historical and wine museum with photos, documents, tools and a 2km educational path through a vineyard. Lussac, 4 km north, produces excellent Lussac-Saint-Emilion, which you can learn all about in the village's Maison du vin.
