Even if the hikes at the
bottom of the Verdon canyon are not too difficult, you have to take some
necessary precautions and a certain material with you.
--first you need good hiking shoes, drinking water, a sweater for the passages,
which could be fresher, a torch lamp, and a first-aid kit.
--buy the IGN map at 1/50,000 “Moustiers Sainte Marie” as well as the
topoguide of the “Sentiers de Grande Randonnée GR 4 from Grasse to Pont-Saint-Esprit through the canyon du Verdon” and the
GR 99 “Collines du Haut-Var de Toulon aux Gorges du Verdon”.
--Never, never leave the trails,
don’t try the shortcuts (it might be an eternal one falling from a cliff).
--Don’t cross the Verdon river, excepting absolute necessity. The unballasting
of the dams can produce sudden variations in the river level . The river will
turn wild and you will be unable to come back to the side you left.
--inform very seriously about the weather forecast. There are sometimes very
violent storms at the bottom of the Canyon.
--Don’t pick the flowers, plants. Don’t make any fire and don’t litter.
With 120,000 visitors a year, the gorges would die if people don’t show a bit
of civic behaviour. 34 tons of thrash have been retrieved from the Gorges in
1996!n proving that a lot of people didn’t read my advices :-)
