Marineland, in Antibes is an unexpected success! The first mammiferous marina situated in Antibes celebrated its 32nd (1.2 million visitors in 1999!!). Two years ago they opened the world's biggest Orcas basin, 12 meters deep, an immense water volume (44 millions litres of sea water) and an exceptional underwater visibility, thanks to a glass window of 64 metres long and 4,60 meters high. The most innovative basin ever imagined. Cost: 100 million FF, which is not very much in today's standards. The founder of Marineland, Roland de la Poype, tells the anecdote that the first visitors in the sixties asked him: "And where are the lions? " Thirty years later, the story still makes him smile, this eternal young man, great defender of the sea, and heir of a long line of navigators. He is not only the founder of Marineland, he was also a WWII hero, inventor of new plastic derivates, the carosserie of the Mehari a.s.o. But above all "the preservation of the animals precedes the one of the sea." He has a terrific staff around him, led by Mike Riddell, director. Pedagogy, species reproduction and scientific research are a daily part of their lives. They are particularly proud of the birth of three Orcas and dolphins, the shark tunnel and the "Medusa Odyssey". Notice also a superb musée de la Marine in the park, presenting one of the most beautiful collections of private marine objects in Europe.
Marineland is located on RN 7 near Antibes.
