Cannes reflections

Croisette and port

Au Bec Fin, 12 rue du 24 Aout. Tel 0493383586. Near the train station.
The décor is really unattractive but it is cheap and good. Very popular with the Cannes citizens. For 16 and 21 € you have your money’s worth! Don’t go too late, it is quickly packed. Terrine de chevre au confit de tomates, very good choucroute.

Aux Bons Enfants, 80 rue Meynadier. No telephone.
In the buzzing street where daily market is held.   After a sympathetic welcoming as we wished more to have, you can take advantage of a simple cuisine, original, familial and regional, all fresh made. Soupe au poisson, lapin au romarin, osso bucco, aioli. Menu unique for 15.50 €.

La Pizza, 3 quai Saint-Pierre tel 0493392256.
The best-known pizza place in the region, which has always plenty of atmosphere.

L’Epicerie, 4 rue de la Boucherie. tel 0493398473. Closed Sunday. In the heart of Cannes.
Located in the centre of Cannes this attracting place has a charming location, quiet and peaceful. Menu about 17 € depending of the market and the fish catch of the day

Le Jardin, 15 avenue Isola. tel 0493381785
Maybe the area is not so exciting but the address is a local secret. Simple little restaurant, not overcrowded by bawling tourists with an adorable garden. The patrons are the kindest people in the world.  The cuisine is tasty with dishes that talk right into your heart and imitates the sound of the cicadas: filet de rouget poelé à la fleur de thym, aioli de cabillaud aux légumesnouveaux, emince d’ oie sauce Louisiane, escalope de veau au miel et jus de raisin. Menus for 11 and 19 €. Any comments? I love this place! Recommended by a French travel guide, I always have at least one dinner when I’m in Cannes.

La Reine Pedauque, place Frommer. tel 0493992919 Right in front of the palais de festivals.
Extremely precise cook, he cares about everything. Freshness, original combinations that is very subtle. It’s rare to see plats so nicely presented. The location is excellent just in front of the palais des festivals. Bourride du pecheur (15 €), poissons grilles a la cendre, loups, daurades, pageots…grilles.   Lunch menu for 15.50 € more than correct. Other menus 23, 30, 39 €.

Le Relais des Semailles, 9 rue Saint-Antoine tel 0493392232.
A little better than the surrounding places, prefer to take the menu for 29 € than a la carte where you will be ruined.

Le Mesclun, 16 rue St.Antoine, the ascending street filled with restaurants (beware of the tourist traps) tel 0493994519
Excellent menu for 29 €.A choice out of 10 for each part (appetizers, entrée, desserts). Superp Saint-Jacques. Accuracy of cooking, keeping savours and tasting Provence, that’s the motto!

Le Bistrot de la Galerie, 4 rue St.Antoine tel 0493399938
Despite it is surrounded by tourist traps this address is quite nice for a reasonable price. Young ambiance and cordial welcome.  Don’t be shocked by the décor, it wants to become the trendy place and I suppose that the owner thinks this is the way…But the food is good and a menu for 19.50 € with three courses. Good desserts. Other menu for 25 €.

La Mère Besson, 13 rue des frères Pradignac tel 0493395924
Used to be THE trendy place but is only the shadow of what it has been. The carte didn't change but is too expensive for what it offers.

La Brouette de Grand-Mere, 9 rue d’Oran. tel 0493391210. Open only for dinner. Unique formula for 34 € (with appetizer, entrée, plats, cheese, dessert, coffee and wine). I’m not sure at all you can finish your meal :-) in this agreeable little restaurant mostly receiving the “jeunesse dorée” like my guide pretends.

Cote Jardin, 12 avenue Saint-Louis tel 0493386028 Closed Sunday off-season and Monday for munch in summer.
Out of the beaten path, here is an address that owes its success only to its quality! No good location, no touristy show, no glittering lights. Just talent. The place is also very agreeable with its beautiful dining room and the charming garden crawling under the vine grapes. But let’s talk about the cuisine. Refined and gastronomic, this is a place where you eat authentic. Very competent patron and chef. Service is impeccable, and you feel this is organized by a real professional, no amateur.  Menu for lunch for 19 € and dinner 32 €.

For other more expensive and classic stars consult the red Michelin or the Gault-Millau. You don’t need me for that ;-).
