than 600,000 tourists climb the 387 stairs of the tower Notre Dame every year.
In that bunch there are always a few depressed guys or gals who see suddenly a
black opportunity when they notice the 69 meters height of the superior
platform. The Monuments Historiques society registered about 30 suicides in one
century, which is low figure if you take the number of visitors into account.
But seen the crowds gathered in front of the cathedral it happened already that
the great jump adepts kill somebody when they arrive at destination. So on
August 7, year 1983, a woman chooses the shortest way down and lands on a
Canadian Quebec woman tourist killing her instantly. Same scenario on the 26th
of June 1989 when a man jumps from one of the towers and falls on a 13 years old
girl who just wanted to enter the cathedral. The first drama of that kind goes
back to the 3rd of October 1964, date on which a French woman, 37
years old, crashes on an American female visitor, jumping from the “tour de
ronde platform” 49 meters high. It’s only in 1990 that an anti-suicide
disposal was installed.
