Where eating a good ice-cream?

Veneziana, Geldmunt 6

This place has the unanimity of all Ghent residents. Here are the best ice creams of Ghent (near the Gravensteen). Without counting the waffles, pancakes and other sweeties!

Where to have a drink

I could write an encyclopedic volume about the cafes in Ghent. Bruin cafes, kroegen, caves, estaminets, rock-cafes, beer or juniper temples, the subject will never come to an end.
The 18,000 students of the city are here to give these places some animation. It would be possible that an evening (or night?) will drag you from one counter to another terrace, and that while the night is moving on, you might lose a bit of your sense of direction, I grouped a few cafes area by area, to avoid finding you dabbling about in a canal ;-)

Around St.Baafskerk and the Belfry

‘T Vosken, Sint Baafsplein 19.
Thousands a day on this terrace. Appetizing snacks also.

NTG Foyer, Sint-Baafsplein 17
At the first floor of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg. (Theater).  It’s the foyer of the theater. Nice hall with superb ceiling. Balcony-terrace with beautiful view.

Korenmarkt and Klein Turkije
The animation here is dense until 2.00 AM! Pick one of the numerous cafes and terraces on the Korenmarkt.

Damberd, Korenmarkt 17
Best place to meet people, at the condition to find a table. “World music “ ambience. If nobody comes to take your order go and serve yourself at the bar and watch the chess players.

Forum, Kubick (karaoke, Wednesdays and Sundays at 8.00 PM.) Maeght Van Ghent (dance on weekends) an a few others on the same street.

Klein Turkije is the area on the left flank of the Sint-Nicolas church and leading to the Korenmarkt. Several “music-cafes” here.

Icarus (house music), De Platte Beurs (neo gothic bistro, mixed clientele)
’T Vliegend Peert (young ambience, little corners for flirting....)

Around the Groentenmarkt (Vegetable market)

‘T Galgenhuisje. At the extremity of the “Great Butchery” (Groot Vleeshuis), the smallest estaminet of Ghent (more historic than this one and you die!). Small room, small terrace, small cellar-restaurant (hyper touristy!!) and vestige of an ancient pillory where the bad debtors were attached or “woman of ill reputed life style”. The wastes of the vegetable market were used to bombard them in all tranquility!
