To stay overnight is an option, rather than to return inland or to Saint-Malo. So, here a few recommendations. I can seem ruthless with some critics but that's how I and my friends felt about.

All addresses are in the Grand Rue.

La Mere Poulard, tel 0233601401 fax 0233485231
Even with a new crew, staff and cook, the famous omelette stays on the menu. Let's not forget that before the tourist invasion, this place was like an institution. Gastronomes came on pilgrimage to watch the famous omelette cooking. We can say without fear that this Mere Poulard is the second most famous place in Mont-Saint-Michel after the abbey and its archangel. Its trade mark is what I call "the rumba omelette", cooked in front of the guests at the enormous open fire .The cost is huge, 15 to 28.25 €!! Forget the menu, the prices are those of a three star place, and of the niveau of a cheap snack bar! As quality was not exactly at the rendez vous, they hired some famous chief coming from Caen. Some novelties, but might having changed in the mean time, seen that they have to deal with too many tourists. Behind the show and attraction there is, sadly, a gloomy picture: the intensive touristy exploitation. But you can also have Saint-Jacques et coquillage au beurre safranée, bar aux pommes de terre (too much cooked), agneau de pré salé and even some lobster.

Creperie La Sirene, makes quite good crepes. At least they don't try to cheat the tourist.

Restaurant Saint-Pierre, Grand Rue tel 0233601403 fax 0233485982
Nice, wood panelled house of the 15th century, classified historical monument, serving fresh seafood, fish and gigot d'agneau. Cuisine simple, without pretension, not always, it's a pity, at the level it should be. Menus for 13-41 € Carte: 29-38.75 €.

Hotel La Mere Poulard, same nr as the restaurant.
In a good standing ensemble, pleasant rooms in a modern and contemporary comfort. Rooms from 46 € to 141 €. Here also they exaggerate the prices.

Terrasses Poulard, tel 0233601409 fax 0233603731
Certainly the best rooms in Mont Saint Michel. In very harmonious concordance with the nearby historic buildings. The rooms may seem small but are refined and bright, looking out on the sea and the city. Smiling reception. Rooms (depends on view) from 50 to 95 €.

Auberge Saint-Pierre, Grande Rue tel 0233601403 fax 0233485982
Good soundproof rooms, well equipped, nicely decorated at the shadow of the ramparts.

Relais Saint-Michel, tel 0233893200 fax 0233893201
Quite recent (1995), has a superb view on the Mont Saint Michel. Large, bright rooms, each one with a terrace.
