As said before, the Butte aux Cailles is one of then oldest areas in Parisnever had some major monument or touristy attractions.

Manufacture des Gobelins |
It only serves its charm through the old fashioned, its situation out of the marginal; agitation of other neighbourhoods and the sentiments its inhabitants feel they belong to a "village 'nicely denominated, peaceful and rewarding for those who learn to like it..
Main attraction of the area is of course the "Manufacture des Gobelins". Visit at 2.00 PM and continuing every 15 min until 2.45 PM only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The ancient royal manufacture, founded by Colbert more than 3 centuries ago, continues to produce his magnificent tapestries. Commune en 1871.In the 18th century the name of Gobelins was know all over the European courts but the 19th century saw a parts of the building going up in smoke.
The habitat of the surrunding area is mostly composed by small buildings and individual houses, sometimes with a garden. Sometimes old and inhabitable. Changements have been made in 1992, changing the whole character of the neighbourhood: cafes and restaurants changed owners and the conviviality disappeared.
All sorts of garbage in the gutters (cigarettes, metal boxes, beer cans, broken glass, plastic bags) without mentioning the urine on the walls and on the floors of some cafes! Used needles have been found all over and the worst is the "tapage nocturne) (night disturbance) of drunk people, hindering the inhabitants to get some well deserved sleep.
