My intention is not to give you the classic palaces or very expensive places you can find in any guide. I have some recommendations (self experienced, experienced by friends, relatives or guides I totally trust) of inexpensive (from 40 € up) to moderate (64.75-84.50 €) and slightly expensive (83.80-122 €) hotels.

Add now 20% to all these prices, also below.

Very cheap

Hotel du Danemark, 3 avenue des Baumettes tel 0493624846.
Simple rooms, clean and nicely decorated. Doubles for 36.50 € bath and WC. The house is sympathetic with her ochre colours but the area is not so inviting. Too many high-rise buildings. It’s cheap though and the owners are very sympathetic.

Hotel Saint-Francois, 3 rue Saint-Francois tel 0493858869.
Quite complicate system but cheap. You will have to pay for the showers (3 €) and they don’t accept you any more after 10 PM. Near  the bus central station, it costs 28 € for two and 39.50 € for three. These are very simple rooms, not very well kept lately…..

Hotel Au Picardy, 10 boulevard Jean-Jaures (near the Gare Routiere also) entrance of the old town. Tel 0493857551
Count 32.50 € for two with shower, WC and breakfast. Without shower: from 24.50 €. Attention! The boulevard is noisy but the ambience is very convivial.

Cheap

Hotel de la Fontaine, 49 rue de France, tel 0493883038.
What is most pleasant at this place is the owner. Such a sympathy and agreeable man! Courteous, nice and you can never bother him! Besides the rooms are nice, clean and agreeable. In full centre of Nice, near the sea AND the pedestrian area... Doubles go for 490 FF with shower or bath, WC and TV. Ask to be on the courtyard side. Let the buffet-breakfast lure you. Only 7 €!

Hotel Oasis, 23 rue Gounod tel 0493881229.
The owner and the Tourist office pretend that Lenine passed some time in this hotel! Anyway it is also located in centre town but quiet since off the street in a sort of courtyard. Count between 61 and 70 € for a double comfortable room with TV.

Hotel Les Camelias, 3 rue Spitalieri tel 0493621554
A haven of peace thanks to its little garden. Located in the heart of town this place has a lot of very old-time clients. Rooms for 35.25 € (no bathroom), 43.50 € (shower and WC) 62 € (bath and WC)

Hotel La Belle Meuniere, 21, avenue Durante tel 0493886615
Rooms with wash basin 170 FF.  Rooms for two with shower and WC for 45 €. This house is very familial and convivial thanks to its charming owners. I read somewhere that if you are more than two you can reserve the large room with the balcony (for 4) 66.30 € only!

Hotel du Petit Louvre, 10 rue Emma Tiranty, tel 0493901554.
Quite a few Americans have already discovered this adorable old-fashioned little charm hotel. Very reasonable says: double with shower for 34 €, 38.50 € with shower and WC. Better book in advance with such prices.

Hotel Ideal Bristol, 22 rue Paganini tel 0493886072.
Not so young anymore that hotel. And they accept no checks and credit cards. Some people don’t accept the 21st century. But they are clean and have a refrigerator. With wash basin only: 23 €, shower 29 € and WC .You can sleep per night in a dormitory for 12.50 € a night. Guaranteed ambience!!

Hotel Clair Meuble, 6 rue d’Italie tel 0493878761 fax 0493168528.
If you need a room where you can cook this is the inexpensive place! There are 14 rooms with a kitchenette, shower and WC. Prices are ridiculous: 28 to 35 € a night for two and minimum accepted is 2 nights. Is it necessary to say that you better reserve in the summer in advance??

Hotel Amaryllis, 3 rue Alsace Lorraine.
Manhattan style small hotel like you could find in New York.
Doubles for 51 € with shower, WC and TV. A few rooms on a quiet courtyard.

Hotel Meyerbeer Beach, 15, rue Meyerbeer.tel 0493630880
A bit the same as the hotel Clair Meublé. The rooms are equipped with a small kitchen, casseroles, a refrigerator and forks and knives. It is also not new anymore but it is clean. Location is excellent. 39.50 to 48 € for a double. That seems moreless the right price.

More chic

Hotel Excelsior, 19 avenue Durante tel 0493881805 fax 0493883969
This is already another class!! Despite this hotel had a dark history in the war (sinister HQ of the Gestapo) it is an agreeable begin 20th century hotel enhanced by iron wrought balconies, stucco moulding and a cute little garden. The rooms from 54 € to 80 € are agreeable with rustic furniture.

Hotel Grimaldi, 15 rue Grimaldi tel 0493160024  fax 0493870024

Near the old town, on a quiet street back from the sea front, this graceful 1930s house is totally renovated (the woman owner is English). Elegant, neat and spotless. The decor is bright with provencal fabrics , white-tiled bathrooms. Very helpful staff. Single 60.50-114.50 €, double 70-125.50 €, suite 184-221€ .

Hotel Durante, 16, avenue Durante tel 0493888440 fax 0493877776. Closed in November. Nice façade, this hotel, run with an iron fist by a charming landlady is hidden in an alleyway. Clean and well decorated rooms. They look out on a garden and the Italian window-shutters keep certain freshness during the summer. Doubles from 64.50 € with shower and WC, 70.50 € for bath and WC.

Hotel Saint-Gothard, 20 rue Paganini tel 0493881341 fax 0493822755
No problem here. A few steps from the train station, this is a place you will feel at home. People from Nice when they want they can be very sympathetic and welcoming.  About 60 rooms well equipped 54 €  a double with shower and WC, 62 € a room for three.

Very chic

La Perouse, 11 quai Rauba Capeu tel 0493623463 fax 0493625941

Right under the castle and close to old town, this largish hotel (Best Western) is the former summer home from Sacha Guitry. Superb views of the baie des Anges, small swimming pool and roof terrace. Rooms ok, air conditioned, nicely done with good reading lights, small balcony. The bedrooms vary in size. The furniture in the corridors seems antique.
Rooms for 92-285
, suite 335-505 €.

Hotel Windsor, 11 rue Dalpozzo, tel 0493885935 fax 0493889457
Now this is a hotel and museum together. I never stayed here but a lot of people recommended it and a guidebook I trust did the same. So I include it in my recommendations. The place, hiding a high façade, is wonderful. A classic hotel with a leafy garden in a small street near the sea front. Right at the entry with the Asiatic furniture, you enter a fantastic world. In the tropical garden, bougainvilliers, palm-trees and bamboos grow around a small swimming pool. This is the place of contemporary art: every room is decorated by an artist. Names as Peter Fend, Lawrence Wiener, Joel Ducorroy, Ben, Philippe Perrin, Miguel Chevalier…Other facilities are: a Turkish bath, a sauna, massages and a relaxation room. Doubles for 64.75 to 114.50 . It’s cheaper in winter. March. For dining, the restaurant has no carte but a 160 FF menu for a good meal where the Provencal cuisine is at the rendezvous…then listen to the birds and look at the art works. This hotel is a real gourmandise, maybe the best in this category. The staff is amiable and helpful.

Hotel Gounod, 3 rue Gounod tel 049388262620 fax 0493882384
Large house of the Belle Epoque , who kept its look. Quiet chic rooms, well equipped and air-conditioned.  Doubles for 62.50 out of season and 108 from April 1 to October 31.

Hotel Locarno, 4 avenue des Beaumettes tel 0493962800 fax 0493861881.
Only a few rooms have A/C but all modern comfort. Rooms were refurbished and cost 49 to 84 . Welcoming and service very chic and courteous. Resting parlours and a billiard hall.  A few minutes by foot from the promenade des Anglais.

Hotel Atlantic, 12, avenue Victor-Hugo, tel 0493884015 fax 0493886860
Not so cheap anymore but for what you get, the price is inexpensive! If you want to play the tycoon in a real palace, …;-) without being ruined. Very classy rooms: 85 to 110 in winter, 118.15 to 139.50 in the summer.

Le Petit Palais,  avenue Emile-Bieckert tel 0493621911 fax 0493625360
Up in the elegant residential quarter of Cimiez, quite a way from the seaside this former home of Sacha Guitry is a handsome white “belle epoque” mansion turned into a hotel. Run with incredible helpfulness and warmth by the Lenzi family, very professional staff and a flowery terrace.  Rooms are bright, air conditioned  and well decorated but some bathroom towels have seen better days. Shady terrace where breakfast can be taken. But finally this hotel is a good value for money in a city. It is a Best Western and a Relais du Silence although I didn’t find it totally quiet. You can hear noise early in the morning. Doubles 84-94 . Suite 145-165 .
