Cemetery to old town

Old town

You can descend the hill  in different ways. If you' re lazy  you can take the elevator down to the quai des Etats-Unis. If you still have your twenty year legs (;-)) take the path called " montee Monica-Rondelluy" which becomes now descente and not montee, to  the picturesque rue Pairoliere, near the place Saint-Francois and the rue Dufour. When you're in the old city,
Follow the allee Francois -Aragon to the cemetery. Best is on a  Sunday morning when all the church bells sound . Tombs all over, in stoen, white marble, whatever.  Peaceful and quiet, you can watch the incredible magnificent view on the landscape around you.
Typical Italian where they like to show off these tombs with ostentation.  A great monument to the glory of Gambetta, and the tomb of the founder of the Mercedes automobiles, Emile Jelinek. Mercedes was the first name of his first daughter. And last but not least, the tomb of Garribaldi, that genuine son of Nice. Just beneath the cemetery, the Jewish cemetery has some ancient tombs.--
The cemetery was set up here in 1873, Nice having big problems finding room for the new dead,  buried anywhere around the churches. A lot of monuments and sculptures decorate the tombs.
Let's get back to old town but before we enter the fresh rue Pairoliere , let's stop for a moment at the place Garibaldi. It echoes the style of the place Massena. This large square was built in 1780 (Italian epoch) when squares like this one were trendy. The square marked the starting point of the road leading to Torino, Italy. It still looks grand with her big ochre houses with arcades. In the center, the statue of Garibaldi.
