Off beaten path for the tourist. Come on Sundays for the traditional gigot d’agneau roti. A lot of Nicois do. Ultra-classic food. Menus for 11 and 14 €.

Restaurant Voyageur Nissart, 19 rue d’Alsace –Lorraine tel 0493821960. Closed second half of July and begin August.
Unpretentious place. This place is ideal to eat some authentic Nicois cuisine. Two menus for 10.50 and 15 €. Specialties: osso bucco,  raviolis nicois, soupe au pistou.

In the old Nice

Restaurant du Gesu, 1 place du Jesus tel 0493622646.
More old Nice image of the quarter and you die! Italian style ambience and reception. Fresh pasta, many specialties and excellent pizza.  Count about 18.50 to 21 €. Very convivial when it’s not too crowded.

Only open for dinner. Closed Sunday and Monday.
A place where a tourist would never think of entering. Only the locals know about it and now…you too ;-) And if you speak a little French you can have a good laugh here. Very correct menu for 18.50 € of home cuisine, Nice style and the portions are big.

Nissa La Bella, 6 rue Sainte-Reparate. Tel 0493621020. Closed for lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.
Another place with enormous portions. You must really like that. But the original Nice cuisine is like that with its savors, its odors. The prices? About 11 € for a dish.

La Cave, rue Francois Gallo tel 0493624846. Open very night.
Excellent Provencal cuisine in this very special place looking like a cozy candy box with a terrace. This chef will go far if his neck doesn’t swell too much... ragout de fruits de mer, raviolis de canard aux cepes, cassolette d’escargots aux delices des bois, filet de rascasse a la crème aux poivrons, spaghetti aux petoncles, poelee de ris de veau a l’ancienne. He will finish his seduction with  a trat au chocolat-orange, ganache au chocolat, or a sublime tarte au citron. Menus lunch in the week 12 €. And 23 € and 32.50 €. 

La Taca d’Oli, 35 rue Pairoliere.tel 0493807093. Closed Monday
This is another typical Nice place. Italian originated with two main local specialties: bagna pan, a fondue with fish as rouget, daurade and anchovy as base, and bagna cauda, a hot anchoiade where you dip small vegetables as artichokes …Menus for 13.50 and 17.50 €.

A cozy dining room with mostly young people. Ambience assured here! Menus for 12.50 and 15.50 €.  Tripes, sardines farcies, saucisses aux haricots frais

A big café with outside tables on the flower market. Try the “bagna cauda” a hot anchovy dip with raw vegetables. 14.50-29 €.

More expensive, more chic

La Merenda, 4 rue de la Terrasse
Since this place has a lot of success and it is very small better pass by to reserve since there is no telephone. The cuisine is excellent! Not a surprise since the chef worked at the Negresco. As the market delivers he cooks, and authentic Nicois! But an ancient chef of the Negresco! Authentic Nice cuisine, as the market delivers each day, salade de mesclun aux beignets de camembert loup au basilic or emince de boeuf au poivre vert. etc… Freshness and inventivity. About 25 € a la carte.

Here you come for the bouillabaisse, really delicious, and famous. 410 FF for two.
You have also a menu for 24.50 € : risotto aux fleurs de courge, daurade entiere rotie au four avec jus d’anchois aux zestes de citron, escalope de foie gras au fruits rouges en aigre-doux et confiture d’oigon

Menus 95 FF lunch in the week), 21 and 25.50 €. Cozy place with good quality/price average. Some succulent specialties : picodon de courgettes au chevre et au basilic, fricassee de scampis a la provencal, filet de daurade au sabayon d’agrumes, pot- au-feu de poisson a la marseillaise.

Grand Café de Turin, 5 Place Garibaldi. An institution of Nice. A landmark. Oysters all day, freshness guaranteed! Count 14 to 25.50 € for a panache de fruits de mer.

More chic

A high level cuisine in a large, beautiful dining room. Menu for 26.50 € for lunch and dinner.  Soupe de poison de roche aux favouilles, grosse sole lignee, meuniere de turbot a la crème de poivrons. A la carte is also very attractive with very inventive desserts. Behind the cours Saleya not far from the sea.

In the shadow of the hotel de ville, a “wonderful “ house. The “Tout-Nice” comes here.
Petits farcis, risotto de truffes et daurade en croute de sel. Quite an atmosphere. Not cheap. Prices vary.

In the new center

Antica Firenze, 113 rue de France. Tel 0493443888.
Not an Italian as you might think but a Calabrian! A huge difference!  Paolo and Fabio prepare the pasta, gnocchi gorgonzola, fritto mist di pesce like nobody. No pizzas, no folklore, no chi-chi. Menus 8.50, 12.50 and 15 €.

A 1930s style bar and restaurant, excellent for late-night dining. Menus up to 29 €.

In the more quiet area of the Art Museum, here is a place where you will be received graciously in a modern and beautiful restaurant. The ambience and cuisine are certainly worth the detour. Typical Nice cuisine. All specialties are here :petits farcis, tourte de blette, daube a l’ancienne, poivrons grilles au pissala, raviolis aux cepes, and a nice tarte aux figues flambees as dessert. A classic ! Don’t be avaricious this time and offer yourself a treat at this 29.25 € menu.

A gourmand address, rendezvous for the businessmen and politicians of Nice. Cuisine du terroir. Specialities . beignets de fleurs de courgettes, secca d’Entrevaux au chevre chaud, Menu au “pistou” for 24.50 € or menu degustation  for 32.50 € with 6 plats

Nice’s finest restaurant. Elegant cuisine with a Mediterranean touch. Prices 70-111 €. A la carte 122 €.

A little out of the center

Chez Pipo, 13 rue Bavastro tel 0493558882.
Open only for dinner except the Mondays from January to May. Annual holidays from 15 to 25 March.
Looks inspired from the “Pain Quotidien”, Belgian invention! The dining room is set with long wooden tables where everybody eats elbow to elbow. No class differences here! The room is a bit dark, but everybody speaks with everybody. Total fraternity. Bourgeois and women meet here to eat a bit dark dining room. Eat here that typical Nice specialty: the socca. The owner and public rumor says it’s the best of Nice. And we are not in Marseille! The pissaladiere and the tourte aux blettes sucree is all what you will eat here except the socca.  But it is worth coming. Located behind the port. . Everything is 2.25 € a portion, count 7.60 € without the drinks.

L’Auberge de Theo, 52, avenue Cap-de-Croix in the quartier of Cimiez.tel 0493812619. Closed Monday and from Aug 2 to Sept 10.
Closed on Monday. In a charming patio, it’s Florence in Nice country and Italy in your plate. Plats du jour for 9 € to 13.75 €, grillade au feu de bois, a lot of pizzas.  Count 19.50-32.50 € a la carte. Menus for 15.50 and 26 €.

Le Sextant, 60 boulevard Franck-Pilatte tel 0493558277. Only for lunch, every day. Bus 32, stop at “La Reserve”. Closed in January.
Magnificent view on the sea from your table. The place is small and you have a menu for 13.80 € with entrees how much you can eat, plat du jour, dessert, a pichet of wine. What can you ask more? Maybe a little smile from the staff?

Auberge du Bellet, St.Roman de Bellet tel 0493378384.
In Nice’s most famous vineyard of the same name. Vintage wines and delicacies such as lobster and pigeon and garlic stew. Menus: 33 and 46 €. A la carte 64.75 €.
