Return now to the Seine, turn left and walk along the Seine until you reach the QUAI DE LA MEGISSERIE, dating from 1369, and one of the oldest in Paris. Today very picturesque due to the presence of numerous "bouquinistes", the department store "La Samaritaine" and a concentration of stalls and boutiques where they sell flowers and thick-leafed plants. And birds, birds for sale with a free show: concert of all kinds of exotic and local birds. Numerous other animals and fishes are also for sale. But in reality this is a very miserable way of treating them. They look SOOO depressed in this polluted area, poor animals! Continue the quay until the PLACE DU CHATELET, the noisiest place of Paris. Traffic is crazy and its metro station the central knot of all lines. On the two sides of the place you will notice two buildings. One was once a sinister prison (prison du Chatelet), torn down beginning of 19th century, and is today a theater and concert hall: Theatre du Chatelet (named today Theatre Musical de Paris). Davioud built it in 1862 together with the opposite Theatre Lyrique, named later "Theatre de la Ville". It's in this theater that the famous Sarah Bernhardt had numerous successes and she became director in 1899 where she created "L'Aiglon" by Edmond Rostand. Nothing remembers either that it was once the oldest market on the right bank. Medieval ages saw this place with a lot of animation, butchers, fish stands, and little shops. A very long time ago..... |
