To avoid clamouring crowds
(particularly on Sunday when entrance is half-price) visit the Louvre on Monday
or Wednesday, when it remains open until 22.00. In case of congestion at the
pyramid entrance, head right, to the southwest tip of the museum, and PORTE JAUJARD, a lesser-known entry point. Another tip is the entrance through the
commercial gallery (99 rue du Rivoli, metro Palais Royal). Another entrance is
recently opened at the porte des Lions (Denon wing).
The museum has a triple orientation pattern. DENON, SULLY and RICHELIEU wing
corresponding to the three directions departing from central hall (hall
Napoleon). With a system of 8 colours that can appear on all floors but
symbolising the different departments of the museum: History of the Louvre and
Medieval Louvre—Oriental Antiquities, Arts of Islam---Egyptian
Antiquities---Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities---Sculptures---Art
Objects---Paintings---Prints and Drawings. But that’s not all! The museum is
also divided into 10 arrondissements. It is to make orientation easier and the
numbers are like that: the RICHELIEU wing has nos. 1, 2, 3; the SULLY wing 4, 5,
6, 7 and DENON 8, 9, 10. All galleries and rooms have a number and a name.
Every visitor can have a free small guide map at the main desk in hall Napoleon
(in 7 languages).
Notice that the Louvre museum is the only museum in the world having hundreds of
exterior windows looking outside. That way you have three wonderful beacons: the
Seine, the pyramid or the rue de Rivoli.
