Le Borsolino, 4, blvd des Moulins, Monte Carlo.   Italian cuisine,  menus from FF95.   A good saltimbocca for13.80 €.  Wine 10.50 €/L.  Service compris. ( a Jim Garner recommendation)

La Cigale, 18 rue de Millo tel 0037793301614.
I hope it is still operating. It was a long time ago. Not far from the harbour a non-tourist place with good average cooked cuisine (fish and seafood mainly). Menus from 13 to 23 €.

Le Perigourdin, 5 rue des Oliviers , Monte-Carlo tel 0037793300602
The name says it all, all out of Perigord. The very cute pink dining room is open for lunch (menu 60 FF) and dinner. Duck in several ways and sauces…Langoustines roties aux agrumes, cassollette de bar cuisine à la koskera, jus de cuisson aux palourdes, galette de queue de boeuf en croutes de pommes de terre and a great chariot of desserts. Menu dinner 29.9 €. Carte 36-51.50 €.

Le Saint-Benoit, 10 ter avenue de la Costa tel 377/93250234
Closed Monday for lunch and from 22 Dec—5 January
It’s the sea, that you can view out of the restaurant’s terrace, that inspires a fresh and relaxed cuisine, maybe a little weak but let’s not be too difficult. Could be more inventive. terrine de poisson à la mousseline de homard, daurade royale au fenouil, honest tarte aux poires. The menu costs 33 € (lunch wine included), 27 and 38 €.

IlTriangolo, 1 avenue de la Madone, tel 377/93306730
This trattoria, even it’s full of tourists is one level above the average.  Sympathetic and very animated, with a cuisine without any pretension  (gnocchi au Gorgonzola, tiramisu). Very sweet prices. .
Carte: 24.50-32.50 €.  Menu lunch 16.75 €.

Beausoleil restaurant recommendations recommended by Jim Garner from Canada

Restaurant Pascale,  13, blvd General LeClerc, Beausoleil.   We had an
excellent grillade forestiere there for15.50 €.   A carafe of wine (3/4 L) was 9.95 €.  The liqueures are only 4/4.50 € each and coffee is 1.50 €.   Prices are NOT service compris.   We liked it so much we went back and the food and service was the same the second time.

Le Cafe Place.   This is on a place on Rue de la Republique, next to the Marie in Beausoleil.  For 10.25 € (service compris) we had an excellent ham on the bone.

Thai Garden, at the back of the Pierre te vacances residence,  rue de la Marché It's buffet style with a 20-foot (8 m) counter of Thai dishes priced mostly at 4.50/5.50 €, with spring rolls at 0.75/1.50 € and 1.25 €.  The food looks gorgeous and we tried a couple of the dishes and they really were good.  Patrons can take out or eat at the Formica-topped tables, same price.  Behind the counter are delightful Thai girls who happily explain what everything is -- that is, they did, in French, to my French-Canadian wife;  dunno how their English is.  Wine and beer are available; I didn't price them. I'd say a diner could eat well for about 9.50 € and a budget tourist could eat adequately for maybe half that.

Monaco hotel recommendations

Not really a place for backpackers to stay for inexpensive hotels. But here are a few:

Hotel de France, 6 rue de la Turbie tel 0037793302464 fax 003770492161334
For 65 €, which is cheap for this town, you have refurbished, agreeably decorated rooms. The rooms are with shower

Hotel Cosmopolite, 4 rue de la Turbie tel 0037793301695.
As a last resort! It’s not terrible but always better than sleeping in the street! It’s clean and certainly not showy. Rooms 43.50 € for two without shower, breakfast included. With shower 61.75 €.

Hotel Le Balmoral, An old hotel in front of the harbour. The rooms are renovated, every year another series. Efficacious welcome and service. Rooms 83.50-147 €. Air conditioning.
